Paintings new.
By making paintings of pensive, lone faces and cropped other human body parts, I’m exploring certain ambiguities and contradictions surrounding the world, the self and human existence. I’m in search of something crude. Basic human emotions. Attraction and repulsion; the need to approach and withdraw; curiosity and sin. What it means to have agency and self-determination while being constrained by own physicality and preconceptions. Striving for liberation while never truly letting go. Wanting to rebel but not knowing what is real anymore.
This project is responding to what it means to live now in times filled with confusion about the present, fear of the future and nostalgia for the past that was never ours.
The genderless characters in the artworks are caught in dreamlike tableaus with no way out. These fanciful scenes, attempt to show an uncomfortable, humorous and seductive universe, both beautiful and hideous.
My work features parts of the human body depicted in isolation. Most of the time its legs. I see them as our connection to the world around us, in a very primal way. This relationship is both physical and mental. It reflects my experience trying to understand the drives and polarities within. I strive for the artworks to instil doubt about meaning and judgment. The viewer can never be certain if the subjects are engaged in a playful encounter or if something more sinister is happening.
